Jorn Barger February 2001 (updated slightly 13Feb)
I'm still searching for a formula I can live with for selling ads on my weblog...
A long time back someone suggested selling ads in the form of weblog 'links' and I'm starting to see how I might do this.
they'd be in my usual format but above the 'Headlines' line, clearly labelled 'paid ad'
they'd be short-term, probably one week (99% of readers will have seen it by then)
I'll negotiate the wording, and may charge more for added 'spin'
I'll definitely have to charge for some page-design consulting, in cases where the page needs work (faster loading, clearer navigation)
there should be different rates for non-commercial vs commercial sites
I don't really know how to set the pricing. Something like:
$20.00 in advance gets me to look at your non-commercial page (and if I like it, I'll link it for free in the regular section)
if I don't like it enough to link it free, I'll tell you how much I'd charge to continue, and what my 'best blurb' would say
if there's design changes I think are important, I'll figure out a way to charge this-- maybe $20 per email for noncommercial sites, and $100 per email for commercial ones?
These charges have to cover the major, major, major pain-in-the-ass of page-authors who take offense at my criticisms. I've been burned often enough when I gave free feedback that I try to never do it even when people beg. (N___T____s take note.)
Here's a real PayPal button to request the $20 'look':
And here's one for the $100 commercial 'look' (but I suggest you mail me before using this):
