Spot woke up in the year 2000. In seven years, of course nothing had changed at all. Beer was still nine cents a gallon and Cadillacs still had the same huge tail fins that they did thoughout the twentieth century. Best of all, the DuMont television network was showing new episodes of "Space: 1999", which had actually been filmed in outer space last year! This was the most pleasant of all possible futures.
Only one thing worried Spot, however. Everything around him seemed to be made of shimmering pixels which flickered thirty times a second, as if he were not actually here, but merely a disembodied intelligence being simulated inside a vast computer network.
