[Up: Gabler] [Jump: ch1-10] [Prior: ch11-15] [JAJportal] [Robot Wisdom home page]
This page is part of an an updating of my 'online Ulysses repair kit' [qv] with added notes, documenting the choices in my own Ulysses edition [qv].
Overall, it appears Gabler was trying to maximize the number of changes he could justify, resulting in some 1000 dubious choices.
New: Joyce's capitals; Joyce's typists; Joyce's deletions
There's a huge editorial riddle for this episode as a whole, involving hundreds of punctuation changes that G blames on one lone typist, whom G imagines was responsible for all of but only this episode, and who created the lone typescript layer this episode required (which survives intact).
The changes move the episode radically away from Joyce's normal style, adding hundreds of commas, plus quotation marks, paragraphs, dashes, ellipses, etc.
But we can easily imagine Joyce deciding that clumsy conventional punctuation would be good for the episode, and laying on a ton of it, scratched by hand onto a previous typescript that's now lost, or onto an intermediate faircopy that went to the typist while the earlier one (the surviving ms) went to Quinn.
This should be detectable by comparing the typescript to the ms text. If there was an intervening layer, it will inevitably have included other types of Joycean 'French polish', not attributable to the typist.
Further, Joyce should have undone the worst of the damage in the proofs, returning to the ms style. (There are no such fixes in the surviving errata lists, and almost none in Gabler's synopsis.)
But even without that evidence, the decision can be based on the overall esthetic effect of the changes, as appropriate or inappropriate for the comedy of the episode.
If a typist was responsible, it should be plainly evident in the destruction of comic rhythms. If there are any instances where the changes clearly improve the comic rhythms, then we can be sure Joyce and not a 'genius typist' was at work.
(After 20+ pages of comparison, my sympathies are effectively 100% with the 1922 punctuation that G rejects. There are very few typo-fixes so far, either...?)
