Finnegans Wake searchpage

(now 'Microsoft Ulysses' compatible)
Jorn Barger Feb 2000 (updated July 2000)

The Internet, and especially its search-engines, bring a new dimension to the study of Finnegans Wake. This page will bring together the best known resources, with tips on how to use them for this purpose.

Google

For now, Google gives the best results for general searches, but its database is smaller than AllTheWeb and AltaVista (below).

Doublequotes "like this" imply a phrase (words in exact order). Periods between words "like.this.example" can be used instead of quotes. Google assumes AND (never OR). NOT is "-pattern" (minus sign). Plus signs are only useful when the word is a very-common 'stopword'. The asterisk wildcard "ending*" doesn't work. Upper/lowercase is irrelevant. [more help]

AllTheWeb (aka FAST)

A huge database, very fast, very simple.

Recognizes doublequotes, periods, plus, minus. [more help]

AltaVista

AV's database is about the same size as AllThe Web's, but it allows much more specific searching via special keywords.

Recognizes doublequotes, periods, plus, minus. The asterisk wildcard "ending*" DOES work. AVOID uppercase unless you know what you're doing. Special keywords: anchor:, domain:, host:, image:, link:, text:, title:, url:. [more help]

AV advanced:

Recognises AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR (10 words), and parentheses. Full form offers date options, etc. [more help]

Recognizes doublequotes, periods, plus, minus. The asterisk wildcard "ending*" DOES work. AVOID uppercase unless you know what you're doing. [more help]
