Paraphrase from Danis Rose and John O'Hanlon's "Understanding FW":

Earwicker's enforced sojourn of three and a half hours of hellish agony in his cell is considered. (This cell, which in the preceding chapter changed from house into tavern into shack into hotel into telephone booth, is now described as a cage, then as a tent, then as a mill. Later, it becomes a teak coffin and after that a stone grave which itself turns into a mine.) His condition of fear-induced passiveness is seen as similar to Tim Finnegan's coma at his wake: surrounded by activity yet oblivious of it.

Here's what the first, handwritten draft of the paragraph said in November 1923, with a jpg of the first three lines:

With deepseeing insight he may have
prayed in silence that his wordwounder
might become the first of a long dynasty,
his cherished idea being the formation,
as in more favoured climes, of a truly
criminal class, thereby eliminating much
general delinquency from all classes and masses.

[Scribbles]

During December 1923 Joyce elaborated this somewhat:

It may be that with his deepseeing insight (had not wishing often been but good time wasted) H.C.E. prayed all through that three and half hour's agony in silence with unfeigned charity that his wordwounder might unfold into the first of a distinguished dynasty, his most besetting of ideas being the formation, as in more favoured climes, of a truly criminal stratum, thereby at last eliminating much general delinquency from all classes and masses with directly derivative decasualisation.

Over the next few years Joyce broke this into several sentences. An early version of the first of these (circa 1927):

As the lion in our teargarten remembers the nenuphars of his Nile it may be the beseiged bedreamt him still and solely of those lililiths undeveiled which had undone him, gone for age, and knew not the watchful treachers at his wake. And theirs to stay.

And the published version of 1939 again:

As the lion in our teargarten remembers the nenuphars of his Nile (shall Ariuz forget Arioun or Boghas the baregams of the Marmarazalles from Marmeniere?) it may be, tots wearsense full a naggin in twentyg have sigilposted what in our brievingbust, the besieged bedreamt him stil and solely of those lililiths undeveiled which had undone him, gone for age, and knew not the watchful treachers at his wake, and theirs to stay. Fooi, fooi, chamermissies! Zeepyzoepy, larcenlads! Zijnzijn Zijnzijn!

Paraphrases:

From "A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake" by Joseph Campbell and Henry Morton Robinson (page 81):

HCE - His Demise and Resurrection: What can our hero have been thinking during those hours when he was enduring the abuse of that unsolicited American? As the lion in our zoo remembers the lotuses of his Nile, so it may be that the besieged bedreamt him still and solely of those two lily-liliths undeveiled who had undone him. At the time of his misdeed he had been gone with age and unaware of the traitors at his wake.

From "Understanding FW" by Rose and O'Hanlon:

His condition of fear-induced passiveness is seen as similar to Tim Finnegan's coma at his wake: surrounded by activity yet oblivious of it. He is viewed as a caged lion in a zoo remembering the lotus flowers of its native Nile. (And shall the lion forget the taste of blood? No. Less then shall our silent hero forget the bare legs of his beloved mademoiselles.)

1927, continuing:

It may be that he reglimmed? presaw? the fields of wheat and fields of wheat where corngold Ysit? shamed and shone.

1939:

It may be, we moest ons hasten selves te declareer it, that he reglimmed? presaw? the fields of heat and yields of wheat where corngold Ysit? shamed and shone.

Notes:

It may be, we moest ons hasten selves te declareer it,
that he reglimmed? presaw? the fields of heat and yields of wheat where corngold Ysit? shamed and shone.

Paraphrases:

From "A Skeleton Key":

Or it may be that he previewed (reviewed) the fields of white-heaped wheat wherein the corn goddess (is her name Ysit?) had shamed and shone.

From "Understanding FW":

Of what did he dream, it is asked, this King William in a Finglas mill, during those hours of excruciating pain. Of the isles of Greece? The isles of Greece where burning Sappho loved and sang? Of the lilies of the field that had undone him? Of fields of wheat and golden corn? Of Chapelizod, Shem and Shaun? Perhaps.

1927:

It may be that with his deepseeing insight (had not wishing oftbeen but good time wasted), within his patriarchal shamanah, broadsteyne 'bove citie, he conscious of enemies, prayed, as he sat on anxious seat, during that three and a half hours' agony in silence, in profundis malorum, with unfeigned charity that his wordwounder, a born engles who would go anyoldwhere on his belly for milk, music or married missuses might, mercy to providential benevolence's astuteness, unfold into the first of a distinguished dynasty of his posteriors, his most besetting of ideas, (pace his twelve predominant passions) being the formation, as in more favoured climes, of a truly criminal stratum, thereby at last eliminating from the oppidump much desultory delinquency from all classes and masses with directly derivative decasualisation and so the hobedience of the citizens be the ealth of the ole.

Here's a couple of entries from the first FW notebook, VI.B.10, from November 1922 (with false color added to the crayon exxings):

The text reads:

Odyss- 12 predom passions
low blackguardism

Here's where Joyce entered the first of these two notes (the orange one) into the typescript, around 1925:

The text reads:

wordwounder might unfold into the first of a distinguished dynasty, his
                       from the oppidum
of his rod and watch her w

              passions) paleolithic

(At this level, Joyce's additions to the typescript were so dense and convoluted that he seems to have made many errors and omissions in copying them!)

1939 (first half of final sentence):

It may be, we habben to upseek a bitty door our good township's courants want we knew't, that with his deepseeing insight (had not wishing oftebeen but good time wasted), petrified within his patriarchal shamanah, broadsteyne 'bove citie (Twillby! Paraphrases: From "Skeleton Key":

Or, finally, it may be that he prayed, during that three and a hell of hours, that his word-wounder might father a distinguished dynasty of black-faced mongrels...

From "Understanding FW":

Perhaps as he sat there anxious in his shamiana he silently prayed with deep-seeing insight that his wordwounder (presumably the reporter from I.3 and here called "Nash of Girahash". HCE is being compassionate in wishing his adversary well: unless he is his own son.) would grow into a distinguished dynasty.

1939 (second half of sentence):

...his most besetting of ideas (pace his twolve predamanant passions) being the formation, as in more favoured climes, where the Meadow of Honey is guestfriendly and the Mountain of Joy receives, of a truly criminal stratum, Ham's cribcracking yeggs, thereby at last eliminating from the oppidump much desultory delinquency from all classes and masses with directly derivative decasualisation sigarius (sic!) vindicat urbes terrorum (sicker!): and so, to mark a bank taal she arter, the obedience of the citizens elp the ealth of the ole.

with directly derivative decasualisation sigarius (sic!) vindicat urbes terrorum (sicker!):
and so, to mark a bank taal she arter,

Paraphrases: From "Skeleton Key":

Or, finally, it may be that he prayed, during that three and a hell of hours, that his word-wounder might father a distinguished dynasty of black-faced mongrels; for it was one of his besetting ideas that there should be formed a criminal caste, to eliminate desultory delinquency from the general economy of the state.

From "Understanding FW":

In this way, it is intimated, HCE could realize his most cherished ambition-- the formation of a true criminal stratum of black sheep and cribcracking yeggs (burglars), thereby eliminating from society much desultory delinquency and securing by the obedience of all classes and masses the felicity of the town.

Continuity (FW69-71, here in Cadbury's kernel's version):

First, a gateway there was for one thing for the suroptimist had bought and enlarged that shack under fair rental of one yearly sheep, value of sixpence, and one small yearly pig, value of eightpence, to grow old and happy in for the remaining years and when everything was got up for the purpose he put a gate on the place by no means as some pretend a bedstead in lieu of a gate to keep out donkeys and just thenabouts the gate was locked on him on purpose by his faithful people to keep him inside in case he felt like sticking out his chest too far and tempting gracious providence by a stroll, unaccustomed as he was yet to being freely clodded. It ought to be always remembered in connection with what has gone before that there was a commercial stopping in the Rum and Puncheon earlier than that and he missed six pounds fifteen and found his coat disturbed. The gate business was in fact a tissue of threats and abuse and after this sort. Humphrey's unsolicited visitor, after having blown some quaker oats in through the keyhole to attract attention, promised through the gate outside which he was, first, that he would break his head for him, next, that he would break the gate over his head the same way he would crack a nut with a monkeywrench and, last of all, that he would give him his (Humphrey's) blood to drink. He demanded alcohol to begin with and then went on at a great rate abusing him from ten up to one in the afternoon without even a luncheoneonette interval. Earwicker, longsuffering, under restraint in the setting out corner of his conservatory, his thermos flask by his side, compiled a long list (now feared lost) to be kept on file of all the abusive names he was called (informer, old fruit, yellow whigger, wheatears, goldy goat, bogside beauty, York's porker, funnyface, white elephant, Dirty Butter, Cainandabler Ireland's Eighth Wonderful Wonder, Codsoilman, Hoary Hairy Hoax, Big Bloody Murderer, Midnight Sunburst, Swad Puddlefoot, gouty ghibellino, loose Luther, muddle the plan, guineapig's bastard, boose in the bed, mister fatmeat) but did not otherwise respond beyond such sedentarity, though it was as easy as kisshands for him to reach for the hello grip and ring up Crumlin exchange, because, as he explained, touching his wounded feelings in the future, the dominican mission was on at the time and he thought it might reform him. The more than considerably unpleasant bullocky before he rang off pegged a few stones all of a size but possibly his seeing the seriousness of what he might have done had he really carried out his terrible intention made him leave down the stones and having sobered up a bit this backblocks boor left the scene after exhorting Earwicker or Mr Earwicker to come outside out of that so as he could burst him all up or if he didn't he didn't know what he wouldn't do to him after which he proceeded in the direction of the deaf and dumb institution about ten or eleven minutes walk away.

It may be that with his deepseeing insight (had not wishing often been but good time wasted) H.C.E. prayed...
