FW Notebook VI.B.46

Only two Finnegans Wake notebooks have so far been edited and published: Scribbledehobble by Connolly in 1961, and in 1978 Danis Rose's edition of VI.B.46, "James Joyce's The Index Manuscript". B46 dates from 1938, and consists almost entirely of word- lists, mostly foreign languages (suggesting an image of Joyce artificially inflating the Guinness-book-of-records quality of FW).

The Armenian and Dutch lists contribute heavily to FW75-78, added to the galleys in 1938:

Armenian (JJA39 p186-7; B46 p89-92; Rose p187-94): Armenian, Boghos, ouxdador (pelerin), baregam (ami), marmazan (corporel), arioun (sang), ariuz (lion)

Dutch (JJA39 p215; B46 p119-120; Rose p286-90). All of these go into FW75-78, except the unexxed ones:

Dutch, Wij hebben, zijnzijn, tot weerziens, upseek, dunderdog [not exxed], taal (langue), spoorweg, whenever (when), near the (to the), insteppen! you most your hasten self, houdenddoos, te, declareer, vigilantes (cars), met the trein, fooi (tip) postsigil binnenland + buitenland offdealing (dept) brievenbus, in't [not exxed] zeep (soap) chamermeissy, kunt ye gif mij pair of soft eggs, onderbroeken [not exxed] borstrok (gilet) [not exxed] as a forescut, reekwater, Best (bien), hoofd, koorts (fever), verstoppen [not exxed] overgeven (give it up) eatlust kisspineij [not exxed], a breakmiddle, zout (salt), I hold wel with hot rum, aboardshoop, aardappelen grunte, princess bonen [not exxed], klare (brandy) [not exxed] druiven (grapes) patrizjen (partridges) spuitwater, te huur (hire) ladykant (bed), a new pack of klerds, 'Tis goed. geheelt, t'huis, Wacht even (minute), they pass me (shoe), Now good, courant (journal) wanderling, good township, diergaarden [not exxed], a bitty, lent (spring), stuffery (dusty), liefer, door (thro) up your health, worst, [continuation lost]

Apparently a notebook page was torn out, likely including: negen en twintig, stil, ei, laarzenlade, grondwet, maatschappij, hunebed, oorlog, vocht, als het u belieft, heer, bier, zak, rook, vleeshouwer, varkenspootjes, jawel, konditie, hoedenwinkel
