Opposite-gendered middle names?

Jorn Barger October 2000

Ellmann reports (p21, 2nd edition) that James Joyce's middle name was officially registered as 'Augusta'. and Nora's as "Joseph'. Bloom's middle name is given as 'Paula'. And I find many other examples, especially among the Irish, that make me think there's a superstition being practiced here. (Another explanation I've heard is that the middle name is chosen for a saint, regardless of gender.)

But I'm going to list examples here, and invite additions or comments.

Denis Florence MacCarthy (1817-1882)

Joseph Mary Plunkett (poet and revolutionary) (b1887) [French]
